What is a Screen Saver?
A "screen saver" was originally designed to do just that - save your
screen! In the early computer days, personal computers that were left on
for hours and hours with the same image showing on the screen. This
image would eventually start to "burn" that image into the phosphor
lining on the inside of a monitor. This would result in a "burned-in"
image that would remain with the screen for the rest of it's life.
Nowadays, however with Power Saving settings that shut monitors off
after a certain amount of time, this is generally not a problem. We say
"generally" because it still happens. The next time you use the ATM have
a good look at the screen. The main screen that you see when you
approach the bank's ATM is "On" for 95% of it's life and is burned into
the screen. Imagine if that happened to your home monitor. Every time
you look at your personal computer all you see is the Windows™ flag
burned into your monitor! Arghhh!
Screen savers though have evolved from simple "Screen Savers" and are
now complete entertainment on their own. Windows™, still comes with it's
full array of star fields, algorithmic onscreen spyrographic images,
marquee text, etc., but who wants those when we can have an imaginary
escape instead!!
Screen savers now include animations, nature scenes, luxury holiday
destinations, moving images, imaginary Sci-Fi scenes, and the list goes
on and on. They can be used for advertising, promotion of a product or
service, can include music and sound effects, flashing lights. The most
popular screen savers are those that include cars, animals, landscapes,
sceneries, celebrities and beautiful people.
